More than 500 years ago, Leonardo da Vinci lived in Italy. As a child, he loved being outside. He watched nature carefully and liked to draw what he saw.

Leonardo asked many questions. He wanted to understand how things worked. He studied water, animals, plants, weather, and even the human body.

He filled notebooks with sketches, inventions, and ideas. Some of his drawings showed flying machines, bridges, and unusual tools. Many of his ideas were far ahead of his time. Some inventions were not built until hundreds of years later.

Leonardo used his eyes, his hands, and his imagination to learn about the world.
